Research Context
Why this archive item matters in the wider Serebriakova family story.

The notice is valuable because it records the Collection's own film work around family memory: Zinaida's departure to Paris, the children separated between France and Soviet Russia, and the later descendants who tried to reconnect the archive.

Read it together with the Serebriakova family line and the 2014 Kultura documentary notice: both frame the family history not as background decoration, but as one of the main keys to understanding the artist's later life.

The film tells the story of the difficult fate of the Russian artist Zinaida Serebriakova and her family.

The Revolution split Zinaida Serebriakova’s family in half.

Two of her children went with their mother to Paris, while the other two had to stay behind with their grandmother in Russia.

Eighty-five years later, through the descendants of Tatiana (who stayed in Russia), we come to Paris to meet her sister Ekaterina, who devoted her entire life to her mother’s work.

How did the two parts of the family live on opposite sides of the Iron Curtain? Which of them was destined to fulfill their potential? Can the family ever find its wholeness again? Director: Matvey Epanchintsev.

The premiere of the film will take place on 3 December 2018 in Moscow at the FILMDOC.RU film club, at 25 Petrovka St., MART Cafe.

The screening begins at 20:00.
